Jieling Pua
TEAM MANAGEMENT, WEBSITE
Jieling (she/her) is a senior at Brookline High School. She is passionate about social justice and education equity. Jieling finds that reading, writing, and journaling are practices that help her care for herself, so it only makes sense that one of Jieling’s favorite places in Brookline is the Brookline High School Library.
“SCL is a unique opportunity to not only help support students, but also teachers. For me, SCL means that I can also be someone who can educate others on issues students often face.”

Who is a justice figure you want to uplift?
I want to uplift Keira Flynn-Carson (BHS School Within a School English Teacher) for her work in not only teaching a social justice class, but also incorporating justice themes in everything she teaches. She is incredibly dedicated to student empowerment, and constantly pushes myself and other students to think outside of the box, and think more deeply about issues that are present in society.

Who is a justice figure you want to uplift?
Grace Lee Boggs is someone I look up to a lot as a Chinese American and as someone involved in socialist movements. Her work has been key for me to better understand past movements through the lens of someone with a somewhat similar background as myself.

They were also a Millennium Fellow in 2023, pursuing an earlier version of this project.
“I believe that students deserve to learn how to make change and that providing more access to resources that allow them to do that is the key to more effective activism in our communities.”

Who is a justice figure you want to uplift?
Paolo Freire is a Brazilian pedagogist and author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed (among other publications), which has been a big inspiration for a lot of our work and my research personally!

Sarah Najjar
ACTION RESEARCH INTERN
Sarah (any pronouns) is a junior at Brookline High School, where they are Vice President of the BHS Drama Society. Sarah enjoys acting and video games.
“I'm very interested in helping create a curriculum that could potentially be used for multiple years. While I do think research is important, I think what's more important is using the information from the research to create a way to inform others of what we learned so that information can be passed around through multiple circles of people of many walks of life. The information is of much less use if the research is kept solely for those conducting it. With the knowledge we're gathering and putting together in the curriculum, I aim to help build a class that can change someone's view of the world for the better.“

Who is a justice figure you want to uplift?
I want to uplift the women who began the Tisema movement in Ethiopia because the current violence against women there is absolutely terrifying and they're incredibly brave for protesting.
